Scenic Byways are special roads that lead travelers to nearly 100 National Wildlife Refuges, as well as to museums, festivals, parks and forests. Where the Wild Things Live introduces five of these byways:

Indian River Lagoon – on Florida’s mid-Atlantic coast, leads travelers to Pelican Island, NWR # 1, and also to Archie Carr and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuges

Great River Road – where migratory birds and tourists both follow the Mississippi River to White River National Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas.

Creole Nature Trail – leads to Louisiana’s Sabine National Wildlife Refuge – whose 135,000 acres of marsh are a birding hotspot, and home to lots of alligators.

Pacific Coast Scenic Byway –Over 320 miles of this Byway trace Oregon’s coast and pass through the Oregon Coast Refuge Complex

El Camino Real – This Scenic Byway in New Mexico is the oldest road in the country. It was established in colonial times by the Spanish as a way north from Mexico for settlers, soldiers and treasure hunters. Today wild treasure abounds at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
