Phenix City is mainly a bedroom community of Columbus. Originally
built as housing for mill workers, the Eagle and Phenix Mill
Village incorporated with Girard to form
Phenix City. Bridges were built so that mill workers could walk
to work. It was along these bridges that the largest concentrations
of nightclubs formed. Soldiers from Fort Benning were the primary
clientele, but many people from Columbus would joy-ride across
the bridges looking for fun.
