Archie Carr:
A Naturalist in Florida
lake Frogs
ARCHIE: I have always liked frogs. I like the looks of frogs, and their outlook, and especially the way they get together in wet places on warm nights and sing about sex. One of the less well advertised virtues of Florida is its distinction in respect to frogs. .. No other state has so many kinds or such volume of individual frogs; and certainly none has the varied frog song.
MIMI: One of the things Daddy prided himself on was his fairly encyclopedic knowledge of animal, mostly frog, songs and choruses. And His ability to recognize them and know what state in their breeding cycle they were.
STEPHEN: That's why he moved out to this particular spot was the enormous frog choruses that could be heard.
MIMI: I tell you, the memory of being a kid in the 50's, prior to air conditioning, and the throbbing sounds in that pond where the pond just felt like it was going to levitate right up and reach this pinnacle. I believe there was a connection in his interest and his love of music and openness to natural sounds. I mean - to get interested in frog songs I think you gotta be kind of interested in music. That was very much a part of him. He would sometimes hum songs over and over .. And La Vien Rose was one that he particularly loved and would sing as we would drive in the car to and from school.
