1
Configuring the PSIP Generator
  • Proper setup of the Triveni Guidebuilder
2
Dynamic PSIP
  • The Guidebuilder system generates Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) streams that are inserted into the DTV broadcast channels.
  •  PSIP creates virtual channels in the transport stream that allow the DTV tuner to identify and tune-in each channel.
  • The Dynamic PSIP also contains descriptions of each show and a schedule for each associated channel.
3
Start the configuration Editor
  • Start programming the Triveni Guildebuilder by highlighting and “clicking” the “Configuration Editor” button.
  • The Configuration Editor will open and “look” to the computer that supplies the guide data if it has been previously configured.
  • There is a password protected log-on screen. Engineering staff will have a list of these log-on credentials.

4
Configuration screen
  • The initial screen will show the “mapping” between the input data (supplied  by the “ProTrack” server), the virtual channels and the output configuration.
  • Left clicking on an input, in this case, “WUFT_HD”, shows the “mapping” of that data through the system.
  • You can see this “mapping” for all channels by clicking on them as well.

5
Protrack
  • Protrack is a software package used to create a scheduling grid for television stations.  This schedule grid information can be integrated into the PSIP data via the Guildebuilder.
  • To view the  Protrack configuration in the Guidebuilder, “left click” on the Protrack download service icon on the configuration editor page.
  • A manual download of the Protrack data can be initiatied by “clicking” on the “Start Download Now” button.
6
Creating a Service
  • “Clicking” on the Network icon allows you to configure the Channel  where the services or virtual channels will reside.
  • The TSID or Transport Stream ID is the most important item here. Without the ID number the digital tuner will not know where to “look” for the signal.
  • The modulation mode should always be ATSC 8 VSB.

Services and Programs

Completed Configuration
  • Editor showing all streams connected.
  • Output PID numbers:
  • a) WUFT-HD: PMT 48, Video 49, Audio 52
  • b) WUFT–2: PMT, 64, Video 65, Audio 68
  • c)  WUFT-3: PMT 80, Video 81, Audio 84.

Exercise:
  • It is extremely important to understand what dynamic PSIP does for the digital broadcast signal.  As review, sit in front of a television with a digital tuner or set-top convertor box. Using the remote,  tune to the three different WUFT channels.  Initially as each channel is tuned, an information box appears at the top of the screen.  In this box there is the virtual channel number, a description of the current program and the beginning and ending time for this show. All of this information has been inserted by the PSIP generator. If you “click” on the guide button of your remote you will see a schedule of programming for that channel. This is also supplied by the PSIP. Repeat for all three WUFT channels to verify the proper operation of the PSIP generator.
