Configuring the DTP 220
  • A Course on the Proper Operation of the DTP 220
2
What is the DTP 220?
  • The Leitch Digital Turnaround Processor Model 220 is the heart of the new digital broadcast facility. The DTP 220 combines the Create-SD, Knowledge Net/World-SD and WUFT-HD signals into one data stream. This allows WUFT-DT to multicast 3 separate program streams or channels to our viewers.
3
Proper operation of the DTP 220
  • This is a view of the DTP 220 software interface showing the proper configuration of the inputs and outputs.

4
The Initial Non-configured State
  • The DTP 220 software interface will appear as below when no inputs or outputs have yet been selected. In this state, the station will be off the air (there is no signal being broadcast).
5
Configuring the Inputs
  • To configure the inputs you must identify if the inputs are present and functioning properly.
  • Use your mouse pointer and left click on the icon labeled “Server Input”, open up the branch by clicking on the “ASI 1” icon, then the “WUFT-HD SWT” icon. You should then see an icon resembling a TV monitor. It should be shaded Blue. This indicates that the input is present and functioning properly. If it is grayed out, there is no signal present at the input.
6
The WUFT-HD input is present and functioning properly. Notice the bottom right of the screen shows the PID (Packet ID) and bit rate for each stream. There is also a graphical representation.
7
Configuring inputs 2 and 3
  • The procedure to view the input 2 and 3 configurations is similar to that used for input one.
  • Click on the “ASI 1” icon to expand out the view to show the “WUFT1” and “WUFT 3” icons. Then click on them to show the Program 2 and Program 3 TV Monitor icons. They should also be shaded Blue

Review
  • The answer is “c” . There is no active input to the DTP 220.

  • 1) The input 1:1 monitor icon is gray.
  • a) The output bit rate is low.
  • b) The PSIP is not enabled
  • c) There is no input present.

10
Review
  • The answer is “b”. The DTP 220 allows the broadcast of 3 separate program streams.
  • The DTP 220 allows the station to:
  • a) Broadcast in Spanish
  • b) Multicast 3 program streams
  • c) Add closed captioning

Configure EAS
The EAS (Emergency Alert System) must be properly configured for the station to be compliant with FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulations. The eBox signals the DTP 220 to go into EAS mode. EAS data is received from the Chyron Codi and the EAS audio is on PID 53 of the WUFT-3 input. The boxes show proper configuration for EAS compliancy on the DTP 220.
12
Configure PSIP
  • Another important function of the DTP 220 is to integrate PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol) into the transmit data stream. The PSIP data comes from the Guildebuilder input. This is the proper screen representation of the PSIP data input. PSIP contains program descriptions, a channel schedule and virtual channel tables required for a DTV tuner to receive programs.
13
PSIP Output
To set the PSIP output, right click on the WUFT-DT/TV icon and choose the “Configure PSIP” option. This will bring up the PSIP configuration window. Click dynamic and in the pull down window select GuideBuilder, then hit “Apply”.  If there is no GuideBuilder input present you may choose the “Static” PSIP option.
14
Connecting the Dots
  • By clicking on the WUFT-DT/TV output icon we see “Add Program” as an option.  If we choose this option we get a menu item called “splice input”. We can use this to choose an input to connect to an output, or simply “drag and drop” an input on top of any output icon.
15
Output Configuration
  • Output configurations are set by clicking on the appropriate output icon. In this case, we are viewing the HD output. The PIDs must align with the Program numbers for proper decoding at the viewer’s TV set.  The values are shown in the graphic. You can see the current source “spliced” to the output. Also EAS must be “Enabled” for each channel.
16
Review
  • The answer is “C”. The eBox allows the DTP 220 to be configured for EAS.
  • The eBox allows the DTP 220 to be configured for :
  • a) PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol)
  • b) EAS (Emergency Alert System)
  • c) Proper output bit rate
17
Review
  • The answer is “b”, PSIP does not add closed captioning to the output signal.
  • PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol) does all of these except:

  • a) Virtual Channel tables

  • b) Closed Captioning

  • c) Program Descriptions
18
Conclusion
  • The DTP 220 multiplexor is the device that brings all of the signals and programming material together and formats them for transmission. The DTP 220 must be set up and functioning properly for the television station to provide any output to the viewer.
